The Untouched Coffee Raises a Question
The woman left her coffee on the café table.
She never came back for it.
Ten minutes passed.
Then twenty.
The cup remained exactly where she had left it, untouched and slowly growing cold.
At first, the waitress assumed the customer had simply stepped outside or gotten distracted.

The waitress watched him for a few seconds.

She immediately called for help.
People inside the café began looking toward the window as the waitress hurried back toward the table.

The woman who had supposedly left the café was standing directly behind her.
“Where Did You Come From?”
The waitress turned around in shock.
“Where did you come from?”
The woman didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she pointed across the street toward the elderly man.
“He’s my father.”
The waitress looked from the woman to the window.
Then she looked down at the napkin.

The woman hadn’t forgotten her coffee.

The woman looked at the napkin again.
“I needed someone to notice him.”
The waitress finally understood why the woman had left without saying anything.
She had been watching her father from inside the café.
But she needed someone else to see what was happening outside.
The untouched coffee had been the first clue.
The napkin had been the warning.
And the elderly man collapsing across the street had been the reason for it all.
