The little boy knocked on my door at exactly 2:17 in the morning.
When I opened the door carefully, I found him standing outside barefoot and shivering.
He wasn’t carrying a backpack.
He wasn’t accompanied by an adult.

“Where are your parents?” I asked.

He nodded.
I asked him where they lived.

The house stood dark and silent.

“Are you sure?” I asked.
The boy looked at me with tears in his eyes.
Then he whispered:
“Mom said this is where Dad told us to go if something happened.”
